We all know how important it is to keep our dogs active. As the saying goes, a tired dog is happy dog. It’s easy to take your dog on a walk or to the park when the weather is beautiful. But it can be more of a challenge to find things to do with your pup when it’s raining or thunder storming. When the clouds start to appear, start planning some fun for you and your dog that doesn’t require leaving the house! Here are a few rainy day activities that will keep you and your furry friend happy.
If your dog loves to hunt things down, this is a great option. Take some of your dog’s favorite treats and hind them around your home: under pillows, in corners, etc. Then have your dog sniff them out and search for them all! They will be so excited once they find them and get to enjoy their treats. You can make this easier or harder for your dog by hiding them in more challenging places. They’ll get to practice their sniffing skills and have fun doing it!
This plan is bound to entertain you and your four-legged friend! On the next rainy weekend, reach out to a friend who also has a dog. Have the pair over so you and your friend can catch up, while your dog gets to spend time with their friend as well! They can play together inside with toys or other puzzles. Just remember to keep an eye on them and make sure all play is friendly.
If you need something to distract your dog while you get some work done or relax, a Kong Ball is the way to go. All you have to do is hide a treat in it and your dog will be entertained for a long time. The idea behind this toy is that it is difficult and challenging for your dog to get the treat out, so they will be working at it for a good amount of time. However, it comes out quickly enough that they won’t be too frustrated. Once your dog gets the treat out, replace it and go again!
If you’re looking for some simple fun that doesn’t require many toys, these are for you. One option is tug of war. All you need is some form of rope (size depends on the size of your dog), you, and your dog! Just have them bite on it and see who wins! Another simple game is fetch, but with a twist. Find a long straight hallway somewhere in your home. Then roll your dog’s favorite ball down the hallways and have them race after it. Since you get to choose the hallway, it makes the game a lot more predictable and in your control.
If you also want to work your dog’s mental strength, teaching them some new tricks is the way to do it. When your stuck inside, it is a great opportunity to take time out of your day to teach your dog new things, as well as practice what they already know! Check out this list of fun, unique tricks your dog can learn quickly!
If you have any set of stairs in your home, you can put them to use! Stand at the bottom of the staircase and throw a ball up to the top. Your dog will chase and quickly run up the stairs to retrieve the ball. Keep doing this over and over, and we guarantee your dog will ready for a nap, especially since they are working muscles they don’t always work. Be careful, since you do not want your dog to hurt their joints or go too quickly down the stairs.
If you are in desperate need to get out of the house, but still want to bring your dog along, go shopping! Head to any pet friendly mall, or if you really want to spoil your dog, go to a store specially made for your dog, like PetSmart or Petco. Shop around and maybe pick up a few new toys or treats for your pup. (And something for yourself, of course!)
