Does My Dog Need a Humidifier

Posted Dec 23, 2020 in Dog-Friendly Items

Humidifiers can be extremely helpful for us, especially when our environment has become horribly dry. But can humidifiers also benefit our furry friends? Let’s find out!

What Does a Humidifier Do?

Humidifiers help maintain the moisture in the air by producing a cold or warm mist depending on the weather and your preference. The humidity levels in a house are important for both you and your pooch and should be between 30% – 50%. Humidifiers can help prevent dryness that can lead to irritation in the skin, nose, throat, and lips. They can also help ease symptoms caused by the flu or the common cold.

The Benefits of Getting a Humidifier for Fido

But how are humidifiers specifically good for pups? There are actually a few significant ways that a humidifier can benefit your canine companion.

  • Open Up Airways – Humidifiers can help your pooch breathe easier, especially if they’re known to suffer from allergies that can lead to inflamed nasal passages. This irritation can cause your pup difficulty sleeping and even lead to scabs and sores inside their nose. The water vapor in the air can help moisturize and Fido’s airways and allow clogged mucus to flow easier.
  • Soothe Dry Skin – When moisture in the air is low, it can result in some serious dry skin for your canine companion. When your pup’s skin is dry, it can lead to restless itching and scratching that can even result in some hair loss. A humidifier can help soothe and moisturize their dry skin.
  • Relieve Snoring – There are some breeds, like bulldogs and pugs, that are susceptible to snoring due to their genetic makeup. Other dogs develop snoring due to obesity or excessive tissue found on their neck and throat. By moisturizing the nasal passages, humidifiers help your pup breathe easier through their nose and can help ease a bit of snoring by keeping their mouth and throat from getting dry.
  • Allergy Relief – Dogs can suffer from seasonal allergies, just like their owners. The allergens in the air can cause your furry friend’s eyes to water and burn and their nose to itch and get clogged up. A humidifier can aid your pup’s allergy treatment by helping to minimize the severity of their symptoms.

Signs That Your Pup Needs a Humidifier

Before you run to the store or order a humidifier online for your pooch, you should first determine if it’s something they need or not. To do this, you can look for allergy or cold symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, red eyes, or maybe they already have allergies, and they seem to be getting increasingly worse. Microorganisms, like bacteria and viruses, thrive in dry air and can spread rapidly. So, not only can a humidifier help your pooch by lessening any allergy or cold symptoms, but it can also help prevent them from getting sick in the first place.

Humidifiers have a variety of benefits for not only you but for Fido as well. You can help both you and your canine companion breathe easier and make for a more relaxed environment.
