It can be easy to find a collar you like, whether scouring the internet or in-store with your pet. However, once you find the perfect collar for your furry friend, how do you know which size to get? We have gathered tips and tricks to correctly measure your pup for a collar.
There are several dog collars to choose from: Side Release Buckle Collar, Martingale Collar, and Traditional Buckle Collar. These collar types will guide how to measure your dog’s neck correctly.
With a Side Buckle and a Traditional Buckle Collar, pet owners should measure their dog’s neck where they regularly sport a collar. However, owners should measure their dog’s necks both where a collar is typically worn and at the broadest part of the head if choosing a Martingale Collar.
When pet owners measure their dogs, the measuring tape should be snug but not too tight. Additionally, it is a safe bet to leave extra room. Generally, people should add one inch for small dogs, two inches for medium and large pups, and three inches for extra-large dogs.
Generally, collars have the size or measurement listed on the packaging. If there are sizes around a dog’s size but are not exact, there are often holes in the collar for adjusting for a perfect fit. To ensure that a collar isn’t too tight, pet owners should be able to easily slip one finger in between the dog’s neck and the collar.
These tips will help pet owners choose the correct collar type and measurement for their furry friend. Picking the proper size collar will allow our furry friends to live safely and comfortably.
