Halloween Safety Tips for Dog Owners

Halloween Safety Tips for Dog Owners

Posted Oct 8, 2026 in Seasonal

Spooky season is upon us! From carving pumpkins to buying Halloween candy, there is plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks. While the fall chill in the air brings excitement, we should also consider our furry friends during this time. Halloween can not only be scary for our canines, but it can also be dangerous. Here are some of the best tips on how you can make Halloween enjoyable for your dog!

#1 Keep Candy Put Away

It’s natural to want to indulge during Halloween. However, many store-bought candies contain ingredients that can harm our canine companions. These ingredients include, but are not limited to:

  • Chocolate. Perhaps the most obvious of the bunch.
  • Xylitol. This artificial sweetener is fatal to both dogs and cats.
  • Candy wrappers. Though not an ingredient, if ingested, wrappers can cause severe intestinal blockage.

While you can still treat yourself this spooky season, be sure to keep all bowls of candy put away when they are not in use. Instead of leaving candy out on counters unsupervised, store it in a cool, high place like the top shelf of your pantry or a cabinet. This way, you can still enjoy candy while feeling confident your pooch is safe. If you want to include your furry friend in the fun, many homemade treats can get them in the spooky spirit!

#2 Ensure Decorations are Out of Reach

Did you know that seasonal decor is often dangerous for pets? If you enjoy decking out your home for fall, here are some important items to consider putting away for your pup.

Open Flames

We all enjoy a pumpkin-spiced candle. However, with our four-legged friends around, we recommend placing candles on a high surface, away from curious paws. If you light a candle, never leave it lit unsupervised.

Electrical Cords

Although this may be intuitive, tuck all cords attached to decorations out of the way. If chewed on, wires can cause mouth burns and electrocution.

Glow Sticks

At night, nothing says a party like a glow stick! If you break these out during Halloween, keep them off the ground and off accessible surfaces. Our curious canines love to chew, and glow sticks contain harmful chemicals and materials that can damage their mouths and digestive tracts.

Pumpkins

It’s not Halloween without a pumpkin! Dogs can eat fresh pumpkins in small amounts, but rotten pumpkins can cause intestinal issues. The rule of thumb is to keep pumpkins out of your pup’s reach, and remove them once Halloween has passed.

#3 Pet Costumes: Yay or Nay?

Dressing your pup up in a costume is adorable. However, you should consider whether your canine is comfortable. Many pet Halloween costumes use itchy or constricting materials. If you notice your pooch continuously turning their head, biting, or pacing while in the costume, take it off. Consider less invasive dog Halloween gear, such as a bandana. After all, our furry friends are adorable with or without a costume!

#4 Establish a Safe Space for Halloween Night

The constant stream of trick-or-treaters can overwhelm our canine companions. For both safety and comfort, create a cozy, enclosed space for your pup to relax on Halloween night, away from the front door. These spaces can look like a room with the door closed or a doggy gate. This will prevent any running outside or constant barking when the doorbell rings. If you would like to go the extra mile, check that their microchip is up to date, just to be safe.

As you can see, spooky season can be fun for both you and your pup! Follow these tips to make this Halloween both exciting and safe. Be considerate of your pup, and you’ll both be ready to have a Happy Halloween.
