Have you ever been at a dog park or on a walk with your pup and wondered, “Can they communicate with others dogs?” Turns out dogs do have their own language they use to talk to each other! Like us, dogs use their body language and other actions to send signs to fellow dogs to speak. Here are a few of the most common signs in “dog language.”
There are many different signs on your dog’s face that indicate their feelings to you or other dogs
Relaxed: Soft eyes, ears forward, and mouth open
Anxiety: Eyes looking away, ears to the side, and teeth clenched
Intimidation: Staring eyes, ears forward, and teeth shown
Fearful: Pupils dilated, panting, and jaw tense
Play Bow: This is a sign of a dog wanting to play or can also be the dog’s way of saying they didn’t mean to play rough.
Paw Slap: This is a dog’s way of greeting another dog and showing that they trust the dog.
Rearing Hind Legs: This is a sign of affection to other dogs.
Biting: This a sign of play among dogs, especially because they are careful not to bite sensitive areas on their playmate.
The way a dog hangs their neck and head can say a lot about how they’re feeling to other dogs.
Head down= submission or depression
Head and neck high= interest or challenging
Resting head on another dogs back= dominance
Studies show there are thousands of different barks that dogs use to communicate. Different pitches and volume indicates the level of emotion in the dog.
So all in all, your dog is communicating with other dogs all the time! Just by watching your dog, you can figure out what they’re saying to other dogs and learn more about them every day!
