What is Dog Yoga (Doga)?

Posted May 6, 2026 in Fun Dog Stuff

Doga (Dog Yoga) is a great way to incorporate your furry friend into your everyday routine. Yoga is all about reconnecting with your inner peace, and often our pups like to disturb that time. So this is a great way to include them in practice while also bonding with them.

How to Practice Doga

Training your dog to do yoga with you will take time and practice. So shut off technology for a bit and really zone in on working with your connection with your pup. Start by creating a distraction-free place. Roll out the mat in a quiet room and let your dog join you naturally, rather than forcing them in. Begin with simple poses and relaxation techniques to warm your canine up to the practice, instead of diving right in. Working your way up to more complicated poses will help them adjust better.

Simple Poses to Start With

  • Quet Lotus Pose (Ardha Padmāsana)
  • Child’s Pose (Balasana)
  • Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Śvānāsana)
  • Warrior 2 (Vīrabhadrāsana B)
  • Leg Extension
  • Tree (Vṛkṣāsana)
  • The Corpse Pose (Savasana)
  • Breathing Exercises

Consistency matters more than duration, so even 10-15 minutes a day will be enough to build familiarity and trust. Just be sure to follow your dog’s lead and allow them to find inner peace with you.

Benefits of Doga

Now you may be thinking, what are the benefits of practicing doga? Well, it offers everything from physical, mental, and emotional benefits for both you and your fido. Just like traditional yoga, doga can help you lower anxiety levels and keep you calm and centered. If your pup is a dog with lots of anxiety or is highly reactive, this is a great way to help them learn how to stay calm. Doga can also help strengthen your body in a unique and fun way. It will help with better circulation, help with joint pain, and relax your body’s built-up tension. Canines thrive on routine and engagement, and introducing an activity like doga into their day can break up their day in a positive way.

Doga is essentially less about the perfect poses and more about the connection you strive to make with your fluffy best friend. If you think you need more guidance for this new activity, try finding a nearby doga class! Who knows, it might just become your favorite way to unwind together.
